Other Years

2008
April 18:  I bought a package of seeds at Canadian Tire.
22: I put 9 seeds in water to soak.
24: I planted them in 9 cells.
24: About 5 sprouts are coming through.
May 16: I transferred my 8 seedlings to styrofoam cups. They are healthy with 2 leaves, but got sun-scorched after a short period in the sun recently.
31: I improvised a trellis for them and set them out.
June 16: They have not grown.
October 8: One plant grew about a metre up its pole. The others have not grown up at all.

2006
April 24:  I put my 19 seeds in water to soak.
May 1:  I remembered the seeds. Of course I left them too long but none of them seemed to have sprouted anyway.

2004
April 12:  I put seeds in water, 10 from last year's packet, 5 from last year's garden, and 3 from a new packet.
13:  I planted them in 18 cells.
17:  They are pushing the soil up, but none have pushed their leaves up yet.
26:  There are now 12 sprouts.   I have been breaking the seed coats off.   This often injures the cotyledons, but I don't think they will get out on their own.   I also put 6 more seeds in water.
26:  I planted those seeds, and there are now 13 sprouts.
May 29:  I set out my 18 plants evenly around my 6 poles.
July 30:  Not much growth.   None in June, which was cool, and little in an also cool July.
August 24:  They are still just clusters of leaves around the bases of their trellises.   I guess the cool wet summer was not good for them.

2003
April 1:  I ordered seeds of white moonflower from Stokes.
16:  I began soaking 20 seeds for 48 hours.   The seeds resemble kernels of corn.
18:  Most of the seeds have swollen substantially, and many have split on one side revealing structures inside.   I planted 16 in 4 4-paks, and 4 in a Styrofoam cup.
22:  10 sprouts in the 4-paks.
May 19:  They have been doing fine but this morning all the lower leaves are wilted!   They were in the rain yesterday, and had wet roots for a day or so, and the temperature is cooler just now, but I don't know what caused their collapse.   I have brought them inside to see if they recover.
May 21:  They have mostly recovered, but many of the lower leaves are damaged.
25:  I set them all out in the long planter box at Gio's.
June 25:  Two have died.   The others are growing rather slowly.   Most of them are, unexpectedly, branching at the base.
July 29:  Still growing slowly.
31:  I noticed a dead flower there today.
September 9:  There has been about 1 flower each day lately.
October 19:  The leaves became mottled and poor looking when the weather became cool.   I think that location was too shady for it, really, and it seems to need warmer weather than is available here.
December 9:  Seeds arrived from Stokes, one package, $1.65.
