Other Years

2006
April 27: I bought a packet seeds today from T & T, $5.50. There were 11 seeds.
28: I planted 5 in large styrofoam cups.
May 3: Sprouts in 4 cups. Two of them were broken off when I found them. I think the cups had tipped over.
May 24: I set my 4 plants out along the fence. It is early but the weather was quite warm today with continued warmth and showers predicted.
August 1: Doing well.

2005
April 28:  I planted 3 Purple Majesty seeds in 3 large styrofoam cups, and put 15 seeds collected today from last year's plants into 5 more cups.
May 2:  The 3 Purple Majesty seeds have sprouted, but none of the others.
5:  I bought another package of 10 seeds from T & T and started 5 of them.
31:  I set out 5 plants along the fence. I still have 2.
June 24:  I set those 2 into the rudbeckia bed a few weeks ago.
July 19:  They have developed several sturdy stems, and one plant has a flower.
October 2:  Looking fine against the fence.

2004
April 27:  Despite a long seach, I have not been able to find the seeds I collected last year, so today I ordered a new package from Stokes.
May 4:  The seeds arrived today and I planted 6 of them in large cups.
6:  6 sprouts this evening.
June 1:  I set 5 plants along the fence and one in the south perennial bed.
July 15:  The plume on one plant is opening.
August 24:  Although they have a nice form and colour, they are small.   The cool wet summer could not have been good for them.

2003
April 16:  I planted 6 seeds in the cells of a tall 6-pak.   The seeds are from a package of 12 seeds bought from T&T.
18:  6 tiny sprouts just poking through!
May 10:  I transplanted them into larger pots.   They were at risk of becoming rootbound.   I read on the internet yesterday that if they become rootbound their initial spike will not grow to its normal size.
May 22:  I set out 5 of my 6 plants.
May 23:  I put the 6th plant into the garden.
July 5:  They are all growing well, and looking majestic although not full size yet.   I see today that one plant is producing a flower spike.
20:  They are all growing well, and looking majestic.   The plant with the first flower spike is now producing small green projections, probably flowers, from its spike.
October 12:  I gave some spikes to Jennifer for her pet bird.
