Other Years

2007
May 12: Ben planted 2 roots that I saved from last year, one large and one quite small.
27: Sprouts today from both plants.
June 16: Those sprouts have not grown. Strange.
23: No sign of them. It appears that the sprouts were not four o'clocks at all.

2006
April 16: I started 4 large cells using my last 6 seeds.
22: 2 sprouts.
May 25: I set both plants out.
August 1: Doing miraculously! The pink-flowered one is large with many flowers open in the evening. The other has yellow flowers with markings and is medium size. The have both done remarkably well in this dry summer.

2005
April 24:  I started 4 large cells with 2 seeds in each cell. The inner seed is from 2003 and the outer seed is from the original package.
30:  Sprouts this morning.
May 15:  I planted 4 roots systems from last year in small pots.
28:  I planted the only surviving seedling. The roots have not produced anything.
July 27:  A few yellow flowers today.
October 4:  Flourishing now.

2004
April 18:  I planted 6 cells.   In each cell I put a seed from the package and a seed that I collected last year.   I also started 3 sets of tubers in 3 very large cups.
23:  3 sprouts from the seeds.
24:  Sprouts in 2 of the cups, and an extensive root network.
June 23:  The tubers grew into tall plants; they should be started later.   I set them out in May.   One broke off in the wind.   The others are doing well as are the 2 seedlings I planted.
July 30:  Flowering nicely, one yellow, one pink.
October 18:  I brought in the tubers a few weeks ago.

2003
March 28:  I bought a package of Rennies seeds from McDiarmid Lumber for 20 cents.
April 16:  I planted 12 seeds in 2 6-paks.   The seeds are pea-sized, and resemble a poppy seed pod.
20:  In the morning 3 sprouts were just breaking through.
May 23:  I put 7 plants into the garden.
July 5:  Growing well.
15:  They have formed fine medium-sized plants covered with small flowers, that open in the late evening.   They seem to be a good plant for late summer, when others have finished.
September 1:  I have been searching for seeds and finding only a few (7 so far).
October 5:  I dug the tubers from 3 plants.
