Other Years

2003
March 20: I planted 18 cells, with 4 seeds per cell, 2 from 1999 and 2 from 2000, and watered them with No-Damp.
25:  3 sprouts.
26:  Still only 3 so I started more seeds in vermiculite in the warming box.
28:  4 sprouts.   I transferred them to cells, and found 15 sprouts to move, most with very small root systems.
29:  Many more sprouts.   I left them in the vermiculite.
May 22:  I set out my plants, 17 fine ones and one small one.
June 25:  One flower.
July 29:  Many flowers.   I have been deadheading.
August 14:  I stopped deadheading August 1, and cleared the plants away today.

2002
March 15: I planted 18 cells, with 4 seeds per cell, 2 from 1999 and 2 from 2000.
18: Sprouts, many with the seed pods on.
2: Almost all the leaves have escaped from the seed pods.
April 7: I divided them, giving 27 cells for 28 plants.
May 24: I gave them a dose of No-Damp.   They appeared to be suffering and dying like the sunflowers and zinnias, whether from disease or irregular watering I do not know.
28: I set out most of my plants.
September 7:  They did not do well this summer.   Perhaps they needed deadheading whilst I was away, but I think the problem was more general than that.   One lasted longer that the others, but it has totally gone to seed now.

2001
December 2: None this year.

2000
March 14: I started my seeds today, 9 cells with 2 seeds per cell. The seeds are from last summer's garden.

May 21: I set out 9 plants.
June 28: First flowers.
